Trauma is a natural response to overwhelming events. The effects can endure for years, causing a person to think and behave in unhelpful and sometimes harmful ways.

Our experience - supported by extensive research - shows that the effects of trauma can be reduced and that how we work with people can support this process. We build awareness and skills to help people heal their trauma and live better lives - and we support the organisations they depend on to deliver better outcomes for everyone they serve.

The truth about trauma

  1. Trauma can happen at any stage of life and is caused by events (or a series of events) which overwhelm a person’s coping mechanisms.

  2. Trauma can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, race, or socio-economic factors.

  3. Living with trauma is a reality for many people yet the effects are often misunderstood, leaving the person without the support they need to recover.

  4. Trauma is a factor in many issues that affect individuals and their communities and strains resources which could be better used.

  5. The effects of trauma can be greatly reduced by organisations, environments and relationships that are trauma friendly - which can also help prevent trauma from occurring and potential for re-traumatisation.

Education

We're helping schools and colleges better identify and manage trauma experienced by students and risks of secondary trauma among staff

Health Care

We’re helping drive better outcomes by equipping services and staff to reduce and better manage trauma experienced by both patients and staff

Social Care

We’re helping social care better understand the effects of trauma and mitigate the risk of further trauma. This includes understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how to support vulnerable people such as those with poor mental health, learning disabilities and/or autism

We also help individuals, families and professionals build their trauma understanding.

the results

  • Better outcomes. Trauma informed organisations are better at meeting the needs of the people they support, creating relationships and environments that help people feel safe and thrive. This reduces behaviours of concern and improves health and learning outcomes, and ultimately people’s quality of life.

  • Better for staff and services. Employees may have experienced trauma of their own and/or be at risk of compassion fatigue resulting from their support for others, such as children and adults with acute and complex needs and behaviours. Trauma informed organisations provide good role models and take care of their employees, who in return are loyal, productive and caring towards those they serve.

  • Better for communities. Every day, we see the power of trauma-informed approaches. It is our aspiration to share these with organisations and communities across the world. Just as we have seen much positive change in society’s attitude towards mental health in recent years, we hope to see a similar positive change in how we understand and respond to trauma.
